Key to Career Success — Unlock Your Potential



Veterans are valuable and needed members of the American workforce. The U.S. Department of Labor wants to ensure that current and former military personnel have access to the career tools necessary to find good jobs with good wages and career pathways — especially after returning home from combat.

The Key to Career Success campaign is designed to connect you with workforce services at One-Stop Career Centers in communities so you can access high-quality employment and training services.

Who's Eligible?
Key to Career Success services are available to any U.S. military personnel transitioning to civilian life; to specified National Guard and Reserve personnel; and to other veterans looking for job search help. Service members receive a Key to Career Success card near the end of their deployment. If you have received a card, you'll find a toll-free number to access services in your area. If you haven't received a card, you're still eligible for all Key to Career Success services; simply follow the directions below to locate a local One-Stop Career Center.

How Do I Obtain a Key to Career Success wallet card?
There are two ways to obtain a Key to Career Success Card:
  1. Attend a Transition Assistance Program (TAP) Class. Key to Career Success Cards will be distributed to transitioning military personnel, demobilizing military reserve and national guardsmen and women, and recently separated veterans through the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) and military branch pre-separation sessions in the United States and abroad.
  2. Call the Department of Labor Toll Free Help Line. Other veterans may order a free card through the Department of Labor’s Toll Free Help Line 1-877-US2-JOBS (1-877-872-5627) (TTY: 1-877-889-5627).
You are still eligible for all Key to Career Success services without the wallet card; simply follow the directions below to locate a local One-Stop Career Center.

What Services are Available at One-Stop Career Centers?
One-Stop Career Centers offer a wide variety of career-planning and job search resources, including:
  • Matching military skills to civilian occupations
  • General skills and interests assessments
  • Career guidance
  • Job search assistance including resume writing and interview skills
  • Skills training for high-demand jobs in local communities
  • Child care
  • Transportation
  • Relocation assistance

Before You Visit the One-Stop For the First Time:
  • Call the One-Stop to find out if you need to make an appointment to talk with a veteran representative. Find the phone number at America's Service Locator.
  • Collect military papers to bring with you, including:
    • Verification of Military Experience and Training (DD-2586)
    • Separation papers (DD-214)
    • To find out more about obtaining these and other documents, see Get Military Records
  • Print out a copy of your resume or create a list of past jobs and experience.
  • Talk to family and friends about your immediate and long-term job search goals.

What Resources are Available to Help Military Spouses and Families?
Frequent permanent changes of station (PCS) moves associated with the military lifestyle create challenges for spouses and family members, including maintaining stable careers and job tenure, and obtaining and receiving training and education.

It is critical to provide military spouses with the best available tools to aid them in their search for employment. One-Stop Career Centers are prepared to offer services and special programs targeted to meet the specific employment needs of military family members.
