Find a job opportunity that really attracts you.

When you’re unemployed, you may feel that you need to apply for every possible job opening. But even in the tightest labor market, there are opportunities in various industries and occupations. Here are some guidelines about the kinds of jobs that may fit you best:

  • A job that allows you to grow. You might not find a job that pays your former salary, or uses all of your skills—but you may find one that allows you to explore an interest, learn a new skill, even help people in your community.

  • A job that satisfies an interest. Explore your options to find a position that you will actually enjoy—it will be much easier to convince a hiring manager that you are the best candidate if you have an actual interest in the job.

  • Not sure where to start? Take a few minutes to brainstorm your interests and values—or visit CareerOneStop’s Self-Assessment section.
