Losing employer-sponsored health insurance can be a big concern after a layoff.
You have several options for continuing your healthcare coverage. See the U.S. Department of Labor’s Fact Sheet on Job Loss for information about enrolling in another eligible plan, COBRA continuation coverage, government plans, or private individual or group plans (this page will open in a new browser window; to return to this page, simply close the window).
COBRA provides workers and their family members who lose their health benefits in certain circumstances the right to choose to continue the benefits provided by their health plan. Recent federal law reduces the amount employees can be charged for continuing coverage. Read more about COBRA continuation coverage assistance under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 from the U.S. Department of Labor. Also find more details about COBRA in An Employee’s Guide to Healthcare Benefits Under COBRA (this is a pdf document that will open in a new browser window; to return to this page, simply close the window).
Dislocated Workers may also have other options. Read more about Retirement and Health Care Coverage for Dislocated Workers (this page will open in a new browser window; to return to this page, simply close the window).
