Experience Requirement: Professional licensure for engineering and land surveying is based on a demonstration of education, experience and examination. With a passing score on the National Fundamentals Examination, FE (also known as the Engineer-In-Training, EIT), applicants need to qualify six years of experience to take a Professional Engineering Exam, which is an eight hour technical exam. We allow educational experience credits towards the six year total, with appropriate verification. We also require references from a minimum of 4 licensed Professional Engineers. When qualifying work experience outside of the United States, the references for that experience must be from persons authorized to practice engineering in accordance with the laws of the country in which the experience took place. If such references are not licensed engineers, they must provide information which indicates by what authority they are authorized to practice engineering. Waiver of the FE exam is available with an engineering degree and 15-17 years of work experience. Examination Requirement: 8-hour National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors (NCEES) Professional Engineers examination and Take-home California Laws and Rules exam. Average Time to Process Application: 7 months. Renewal Period: 2 years. Authority: Business and Professions Code, Chapter 7, Section 6700; et al. Comments: Civil Engineer licensure requirements include three examinations: the 8-hour NCEES Civil examination, 2-1/2 hour Seismic Principles and 2-1/2 hour Engineering Surveying.
