4.1 Industry Principles and Concepts

Knowledge of the basic and emerging principles of the water and wastewater industry.

  • 4.1.1 Be able to explain how the industry provides drinking water and wastewater services (including sewage treatment) to residential, commercial, and industrial sectors of the economy.
    • 4.1.2 Be able to explain investor-owned, municipal or other government, and cooperative business models.
      • 4.1.3 Be able to explain the role of regulators and unions in the industry.
        • 4.1.4 Demonstrate an awareness of the potential uses of new and emerging technologies and processes, including decentralized wastewater treatment systems and integrated water resources management (IWRM).
          • 4.1.5 Demonstrate an understanding of the various types of wastewater systems and/or drinking water systems.
            • 4.1.6 Demonstrate an understanding of the components of water resources management.
              • 4.1.7 Demonstrate an understanding of water resilience, the ability to reduce the magnitude and/or duration of disruptive events through preparedness, response, and recovery activities.
