Free File provides free online tax preparation and e-filing services for taxpayers earning less than an adjusted gross income of $62,000 (as of 2016.) Free File helps taxpayers claim all the deductions and credits for which they qualify. Free File is a partnership between the IRS and electronic tax software companies.
- The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance to prepare their own tax returns. - The IRS's Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program (TCE) provides free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation to people age 60 and older. For more information contact 800-906-9887, or use the AARP site locator, which lists TCE service locations from late January through April 15.

Due to the Coronavirus pandemic, federal tax returns and payments are due July 15, 2020, a 3-month extension over the standard due date of April 15. States may also extend due dates for income tax filing and payments; check with your state's revenue agency.
