Find out if you qualify for the following free assistance with preparing or filing your income tax returns.

  • Free File provides free online tax preparation and e-filing services for taxpayers earning less than an adjusted gross income of $62,000 (as of 2016.) Free File helps taxpayers claim all the deductions and credits for which they qualify. Free File is a partnership between the IRS and electronic tax software companies.
  • The IRS's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) offers free tax help to people who generally make $54,000 or less, persons with disabilities, and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance to prepare their own tax returns.   • The IRS's Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program (TCE) provides free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation to people age 60 and older. For more information contact 800-906-9887, or use the AARP site locator, which lists TCE service locations from late January through April 15.

New: Child Tax Credit monthly payments

The Child Tax Credit, part of the American Rescue Plan, is available to help families raising children make ends meet. As of July, 2021, it provides monthly payments for every child up to 17 years old. Single parent families who earn up to $112,000 and couples who make up to $150,000 may qualify.
