3.7 Working with Tools and Technology

Selecting, using, and maintaining modern engineering tools and technology, including adaptive tools and new technology, to facilitate work activity.

  • 3.7.1 Selection and application
    • Ascertain needs requirements of project to ensure proper tools and technology are selected for the current project.
    • Identify, evaluate, select, and apply hardware or software tools or technological solutions appropriate to the task at hand (e.g., use statistical tools to show reliability of data).
    • Identify the advantages and disadvantages of a tool applied within an engineer’s area of specialization.
    • Identify potential hazards or risks related to the use of tools and equipment.
    • Analyze and interpret the results obtained with an engineering tool.
    • Develop and improve an engineering tool or its use.
    • Operate tools and equipment in accordance with established operating procedures and safety standards.
    • Develop knowledge and skills with a new or updated tool, and apply the tool in the solution of an engineering problem.
  • 3.7.2 Keeping current on tools and technology
    • Seek out opportunities to improve knowledge of tools and technologies that may assist in streamlining work and improving productivity.
    • Demonstrate an interest in learning about new and emerging tools and technology.
    • Adapt quickly to changes in process or technology.
  • 3.7.3 Troubleshooting and maintenance
    • Learn how to maintain and troubleshoot tools and technologies.
    • Apply maintenance and calibration for an engineering tool.
    • Determine causes of error and take the appropriate corrective action.
    • Develop alternatives to complete a task if desired tool or technology is not available.
