License Description

Occupational Description


Veterinary Technicians work under the supervision of Veterinarians. They may be responsible for tasks such as conducting medical tests in a laboratory environment for use in the treatment and diagnosis of diseases in animals; preparing vaccines and serums for prevention of diseases; preparing tissue samples, taking blood samples, and executing laboratory tests, such as urinalysis and blood counts; cleaning and sterilizing instruments and materials; maintaining equipment and machines; and assisting veterinarians during surgical procedures.

Licensure Requirements


Applicants must:
1. Pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination;
2. Be a graduate of an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician School or program. 
3. Be at least 19 years of age;
4. Possess good moral character

A temporary license may be granted for no more than one year to a person who has graduated from an AVMA-accredited Veterinary Technician School or program, pending the results of a passing score on the Veterinary Technician Examination (VTNE).  
If an applicant has completed education, training, or service that they believe is substantially similar to the education required for this credential while they were a member of the armed forces of the United States, active or reserve, the National Guard of any state, the military reserves of any state, or the naval militia of any state, they may submit such evidence with their application for review.  The department, with the recommendation of the appropriate board, will review to determine if the education, training or services are substantially similar and will provide advisement as to whether they can be used toward the education required for the credential.>h3>Fee Information
Initial License Fee- $100.00, or $25.00 if initial license is obtained within 5 months prior to the next expiration date.

Renewal Information


Renewal is required biennially by April 1 of every even-numbered year, regardless of when the license was issued. The renewal fee is $63.00.
Sixteen hours of one or a combination of approved categories of continuing education, within the renewal period immediately preceding the license renewal date, are required to qualify for renewal.
